How does Infrared Saunas Work?
Far Infrared Radiation (FIR) is a form of electromagnetic light energy that is invisible to the human eye. When it penetrates through the skin into subcutaneous tissues it is naturally converted from light energy into heat energy in a process called direct light conversion. The thermal effect deep within the layers of tissue causes blood vessels and capillaries to dilate, improving blood circulation and helping the body to get rid of toxins and metabolic wastes through sweating. Unlike traditional (Finnish) saunas which can only indirectly heat the user by heating the surrounding air, the Far Infrared Sauna in our New York City Day Spa uses infrared radiation (IR) to directly heat the user.
The primary natural source of far infrared radiation is the sun. However, sunlight also contains other types of radiation, such as ultraviolet (UV) light, that can be damaging to the skin. Using a far infrared sauna can also confer some of the benefits of sun exposure without the UV damage that can cause skin to prematurely age.
A Infrared Sauna Health Benefits
There are many benefits from regular infrared sauna sessions. Infrared therapy speeds up the metabolism and can aid in weight loss. This can also help blood to flow more freely into tense and injured muscles and joints. In addition, infrared allows the body to detoxify, releasing environmental toxins through sweat.
Follow your 30-minute infrared sauna therapy at with a NormaTec session to further promote blood and lymphatic circulation. A NormaTec session after infrared sauna will also aid in further detoxification while assisting with muscle recovery, increased circulation to lower extremities and stimulation of your lymphatic system.

The Science Behind Infrared Saunas
For many of us, the mention of sauna therapy conjures memories of hot, claustrophobic, and unpleasant spaces. This may be true for traditional saunas, but infrared saunas have revolutionized the experience providing a pleasant way to get a multitude of health benefits. Infrared sauna therapy (IST) can be an excellent addition to anyone’s self-care routine and may be especially beneficial for times when you’re unable to exercise.
As IRT raises your core body temperature, it stimulates your lymphatic system, immune system, and your cardiovascular system. As discussed, our bodies respond to that by sweating profusely. In addition to the infrared heat triggering a profuse sweat, the water in our bodies also resonate with far infrared heat, and this helps with the healing detoxification process. On a cellular level, the body feels the same elevated circulation, warmth, and energy that usually only comes from exercise.
Infrared heat is a natural element that is both all around us and emitted by us. It’s essential for all life on our planet including human life. The rays used in IST consist of similar wavelengths as those emitted by the core of the human body. For this reason, infrared heat is so safe that the most common use for decades has been in incubators treating preemie babies. This application speaks not only to the degree of safety but perhaps to the healing benefits of IST as well.
For more information, many medical studies and articles outline the benefits and safety of IST.
